Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) Testing
Resting metabolic rate (RMR) testing measures the number of calories your body burns at complete rest using indirect calorimetry — analysis of the oxygen you consume and carbon dioxide you produce through a comfortable mask. The result is a personalized baseline that anchors nutrition planning, weight management, and metabolic-health interventions far better than generic equations or fitness-watch estimates. Combined with body composition and lipid data, it gives Dr. Kedan a complete metabolic picture.
What's Included
- Indirect calorimetry measurement of resting oxygen consumption
- Calculation of resting metabolic rate in calories per day
- Respiratory quotient (RQ) — substrate utilization at rest
- Comparison with predicted values for your age, sex, and body composition
- Integration with body composition (DXA) when available
- Personalized caloric and macronutrient targets
- Same-visit results review with Dr. Kedan
How It's Performed
The test is performed in the Beverly Hills office in a quiet, dimly lit room. You lie or recline comfortably and breathe normally through a soft mask or canopy for 15 to 20 minutes. The calorimeter analyzes your breath to calculate exactly how much energy your body is using at rest. Total appointment time is typically 30 to 45 minutes.
How to Prepare
- Fast for 4 to 8 hours before the test (water is fine).
- Avoid caffeine for 4 hours and nicotine for 2 hours.
- Avoid strenuous exercise for 12 hours beforehand.
- Take routine medications normally unless told otherwise.
- Schedule the test for the morning when possible — RMR is most reproducible at the same time each day.
What to Expect After
There is no recovery — you resume all normal activity immediately. Dr. Kedan reviews your RMR, respiratory quotient, and comparison data the same day and translates the result into a specific nutrition and activity plan. Repeat testing in 3 to 6 months can confirm that interventions are shifting metabolism in the intended direction.
Indications
- Weight loss or body recomposition planning
- Metabolic syndrome or insulin resistance
- Plateaued progress despite consistent diet and exercise
- Disordered eating recovery requiring objective caloric targets
- Athletes balancing performance and body composition
- Patients on weight-affecting medications (GLP-1 agonists, steroids)
- Baseline metabolic assessment in a comprehensive cardiometabolic evaluation
