FibroScan Liver Scan

A painless liver stiffness and fat scan for $250 cash. In and out in about 15 minutes, with no waiting weeks for an appointment, and results interpreted by Dr. Ilan Kedan.

What is FibroScan?

A quick, painless look at the health of your liver.

FibroScan is a form of vibration-controlled transient elastography (VCTE) made by Echosens. A handheld probe sends a gentle pulse through the liver and measures how fast it travels, which tells us how stiff the tissue is. Stiffness, reported in kilopascals (kPa), rises with inflammation and scarring. A second reading, the controlled attenuation parameter (CAP), estimates how much fat is in the liver.

The liver matters for your heart. Fatty liver disease and cardiovascular disease share the same drivers: insulin resistance, visceral fat, and abnormal cholesterol. A liver result often adds risk information that standard lipid and glucose tests miss. For the clinical detail, see our page on hepatic elastography.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a FibroScan?
A FibroScan is a painless liver test that uses vibration-controlled transient elastography (VCTE) to measure how stiff your liver is and how much fat it contains. A handheld probe on the right side of your chest sends a gentle pulse through the liver, and the device reports a stiffness score in kilopascals (kPa) and a fat score called CAP. Dr. Kedan reviews both results with you.
How much does a FibroScan cost in Beverly Hills?
A FibroScan at Cardiolucent costs $250, paid in cash at the time of your visit. There is no insurance paperwork. To book, call (310) 304-5555 or use the contact form on this page.
How long does a FibroScan take?
A FibroScan at Cardiolucent takes 15 minutes or less from arrival to departure. The scan itself is short, and you do not need to schedule weeks or months in advance.
How do I prepare for a FibroScan?
To prepare for a FibroScan, fast for about 3 hours beforehand; water is fine. Wear a loose top that is easy to adjust. There are no needles, no contrast, and no radiation, so you can go straight back to your day afterward.
How is a FibroScan different from a regular liver ultrasound?
A standard liver ultrasound shows the size and shape of the liver and gross abnormalities, but it cannot give a numerical measure of stiffness. A FibroScan measures how fast a shear wave travels through the liver and reports a stiffness score in kPa along with a CAP fat score, which makes the result easier to track over time.
What do the kPa and CAP numbers mean?
The kPa number measures liver stiffness, and higher values point to more inflammation and scarring (fibrosis). The CAP number estimates the amount of fat in the liver, and higher values point to more fatty liver (steatosis). Dr. Kedan explains your specific values and what they mean for your heart and metabolic health.
Why would a cardiologist offer a liver scan?
A cardiologist offers a liver scan because fatty liver disease and heart disease share the same drivers: insulin resistance, visceral fat, and abnormal cholesterol. The liver result can add to your cardiovascular risk picture, and it is also a good way to track how your liver responds to weight loss or GLP-1 medication.
How can referring providers send patients for a FibroScan?
Providers in obesity medicine, aesthetics, longevity, and gastroenterology can refer patients by calling (310) 304-5555 or using the contact form on this page. Patients are scanned quickly without a long wait, and the results are sent back to the referring provider.
